Luxor Temple, located on the east bank of the Nile River in the city of Luxor (ancient Thebes), Egypt, is a large ancient Egyptian temple complex. Constructed approximately 1400 BCE, the temple was primarily dedicated to the Theban Triad of the gods Amun, Mut, and Khonsu. Unlike other temples in Thebes, Luxor Temple is not dedicated to a cult god or a deified version of the pharaoh in death.
The temple was built by Amenhotep III and later completed by Tutankhamun and Horemheb. Ramesses II added significant portions, including the famous colonnade hall. The temple is known for its large courtyard, pylon gateway, and the two massive seated statues of Ramesses II. One of the most striking features is the avenue of sphinxes that once connected Luxor Temple to the Karnak Temple complex, another major site in ancient Thebes.
The temple has been a site of continuous religious significance, serving different purposes over the millennia. During the Roman era, it was used as a fortress and a place of worship for the Roman imperial cult. In the medieval period, part of the temple was converted into a mosque, which remains a functioning mosque to this day.
Luxor Temple is an architectural marvel, showcasing the grandeur and intricate artistry of ancient Egyptian civilization. It stands as a testament to the religious, political, and social importance of Thebes in ancient times and continues to be a significant cultural and historical site, attracting tourists from around the world.
